Greek museums hold some of the world’s most incredible treasures so it’s been a privilege to work with a whole host of Greek museum professionals in museums and galleries in Athens and Thessaloniki over the course of 2017-18.
Culture24 was commissioned to deliver the Digital Skills elements of the Transforming Future Museums Greece project’s International Museum Academy 2017, which was conceived and run by British Council Greece with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
We created a week-long course on digital skills and literacies which Anra (our Content & Partnerships Director) delivered twice, once in Athens and once in Thessaloniki in autumn 2017. She then topped the courses up with single day social media training in spring 2018. The courses were also followed up with online mentoring, supporting the participants as they tried to implement the new tactics they’d learned.
One of the strengths of the programme was support from the British Council to bring UK experts over to Greece with us. We invited Kevin Bacon, Digital Manager at Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove and Graham Davies, Digital Programme Manager at National Museum Wales to share experiences and expertise from the everyday practice of their museums.
We all learnt a huge amount – the challenges facing our Greek colleagues sometimes manifest in different ways but ultimately it’s all about confidence, peer support and being able to work iteratively and experimentally. We’re looking forward to further collaborations.
