What is VanGoYourself?

VanGoYourself  is a website designed to help people rediscover and engage in classic paintings from around the world in a new way. They can recreate classic scenes from some of world’s most famous paintings in a contemporary setting, then share the results with friends on social media.

The site features over fifty paintings from more than ten collections in seven European countries all just waiting to be recreated, including Van Goghs and Rembrandts.

It’s simple, fun, and completely free. Our glamorous demonstrator, BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, picked his favourite VanGoYourself recreations – and even created his own cultural selfie to show how it’s done:

Who’s behind VanGoYourself?

VanGoYourself is a Europeana Innovation and is part of the Europeana Creative project. It is the brainchild of Culture24 in the UK and Plurio.net in Luxembourg, organisations with a track record of successfully working internationally to support arts and heritage venues to reach audiences online, and to challenge the views of some people who think museums can be boring.

I’d like to use VanGoYourself at an event – where do I start?

We developed a 7 page resource pack to support museums and galleries planning a VanGoYourself event. It includes case studies from three European venues who used VanGoYourself to engage their visitors, including Chippenham Museum.
