My role: As Content and Partnerships Director I’m responsible for all of Culture24′s programmes and publications – a hugely varied job. From testing museum games in nine-year-old mode and writing children’s editorial to establishing strategic partnerships with data consumers and commissioning technical projects, every day is different.
My background: Farming sheep & potatoes on a National Trust farm, endless barmaiding, travelling, eight years of primary teaching, museum volunteering, parenting and writing. Then ten years (and counting) of learning on the job with Culture24. Alongside the day job I’m a founding trustee of a campaigning charity called Kids in Museums – www.kidsinmuseums.org.uk.
My inspiration: I grew up with two archeaologists and a manuscripts expert in the family, plus a watercolour-obsessed grandfather. Unwrapping a mammoth’s tooth on the kitchen table and hearing the stories behind the people in my school textbooks, through the letters and documents they left behind, is not an everyday experience for a child – I was incredibly lucky.
So, despite living in the remote wilds of Wales and Yorkshire and rarely getting to museums, working with old and beautiful ‘stuff’ seemed entirely normal. Later on museums and galleries became my thing – from my childhood favourite (NHM, naturally) to current faves Pallant House, V&A and the Ryedale Folk Museum – they’re fascinating places full of amazing things.
